Costiera Amalfitana: Day Trip to the Amalfi Coast

As you are reading this, I am leaving on a jet train and heading north, north, north .. all the way north to the Costiera Amalfitana. And yes. It is still considered the south.
A bit far for a day trip, you think?
Well, you are right. It is a tad far.
I left Catanzaro at 5:45 AM and I’ll be in Salerno sometime around 10:30 where my cousin, her husband and two of their friends will meet me for the day.

They are cruising the Mediterranean, but the closest they get to Bella Calabria is 5 hours north, so up I go. The original plan was for my husband to go with me and us enjoy a mini-vacay along the most beautiful coastline in the world but our bed and breakfast got booked – fully booked! - for the week and hence, I’m going solo.

But that is ok. I enjoy traveling alone and I’m looking forward to the hours I can spend reading a book, listening to music, writing in my journal … and just thinking.
The Ragazza from NYC/Caribbean/Rome/LA (am I missing something??) sent me a fantastic article with restaurant and bar recommendations – so I won’t go hungry when I’m there.

Have you ever been to the Amalfi Coast? Do you think it lives up to its title of “Most Beautiful Coastline in the World?” What other coasts can compare?

It is not so far for a day trip! From London I once did a day trip with friends to Dublin (we got the plane and came back that same day.)
I think the Amalfi Coast is beautiful, scary but beautiful.
The Great Ocean Road in Melbourne is a pretty impressive, and rather famous coastal road too.
Ooooh, Leanne. It wouldn’t be that far if there were no flooded train stations (Reggio Calabria on my way out) or student strikes and demonstrations (Naples on my way back!) It was rough!

You will have a great time! I can only compare it with coastlines in the US, but Amalfi wins hands down!!
We stayed in Positano and we pinched ourselves every morning when we stepped out on the balcony. It felt like we were in the movies- it’s that beautiful.

Yea, the bus drivers are used to those roads, so they don’t think about how nervous their driving makes the passengers! Last time I was there, we lost our side mirror!
Ha! I only lived in Texas for a year so I think it’s okay it was left out.
Buon viaggio. It is one of the most beautiful coastlines I have ever seen. Big Sur is the closest thing we have to it in the U.S. Both places are STUNNING.

You know, HOW could I forget Texas?? It was Austin. See, I knew! I haven’t seen Big Sur in the states, but stunning is definitely the word for the Amalfi Coast.

Thanks! That is a good thing, isn’t it? It was a super busy day trip, but I am so glad I got to see my cousin. She’s the first family I’ve had in Italy!

You’re gonna love it!!! And it’s great that you can go “fuori stagione”……no crowds.One of my fav places along the coast is Vietri sul Mare because of all the majolica studios there. Can’t wait to hear your impressions. Enjoy!

The Amalfi Coast is one place that my hubby wants to go while we are in Italy next year. He has pictures posted all over his desktop of his computer

I hope that you managed to see something of the coastline. Positano is almost two and a half hours from Salerno by bus and I know that the ferries weren’t running yesterday due to the sea.

I agree with Leanne. The Great Ocean Road in Victoria Australia is quite a sight too.
You see, I knew I needed to go to Australia! I’ve been to Amalfi before but I didn’t remember it taking so long from Salerno (it was an hour on the bus). I guess last time I wasn’t rushed!
