SaveLiam.Org: A Father’s Fight
Posted on: Aug 24, 2009I am entering the final week of my ALL-ITALIAN language month and slowly getting used to listening to-and understanding-background noise I hear on the streets, in restaurants and, in this case, on television.
While I wish I hadn’t heard this news brief about an American father struggling to get his son from the grips of the Italian Social Service system, I did. And it broke my heart.
On March 5, 2007, five-year-old Liam McCarty was kidnapped from his father in the United States by his Italian mother, Manuela Antonelli, and taken to Rome. For more than two years, Mr. McCarty, who had been awarded sole custody of his son has been denied guardianship, in what is an outwardly illegal move by the Italian Judicial System.
When the Italian Courts confirmed Ms. Antonelli’s psychological issues-it has been mentioned she has Munchausen by Proxy-they sent Liam, not to the safety of his father’s home in New York, but to an Italian orphanage.
According to an article published on ABCNews.Com, Mr. McCarty is worried about his son’s welfare.
“The last time I saw him was a few months ago and he’s not doing very well,” McCarty told “Good Morning America’s” Chris Cuomo. “He has deteriorated.”

He needs friends in high places. In Italy that’s much more powerful than money.
You are right about that, Judith.

How very very sad, and how very very wrong…so devastating for the father and the little boy. I hope help comes very soon.
I do, too. It makes me feel kinda sick to think about it.
