Back in May I was contacted by a representative from Enjoy Prepaid (dot com), an online phone card / PC-to-phone company that is part of Nobel telecom. They asked if I was interested in trying out their calling card and other website features and since I’m always up for testing new products, especially those that help expats get by a little easier, I agreed.

Personally I’m a long-time Telecom client, myself. Noooooo …. not because their stellar customer service merits any such loyalty, but rather because they have a kick-ass calling plan that allows me to call unlimited landlines in the US, Canada and across Europe for €10 a month.

But still, I thought, I have to pay when I call cell phones in the US and more and more people are ditching their landlines, so having a fair-priced standby calling card never hurt. Right?

Right.

The guys at Enjoy Prepaid sent me a $20 credit back in May. I usually shy away from calling my family on their cells but with this nifty new card I’ve been able to call them and while I haven’t chatted at length, it’s been nice to be able to easily and inexpensively get in touch. I’ve used it to touch base with clients and for lengthy consultations … and I still have more than half of it left.

However, that’s not the best part.

While their cards do have decent rates-currently between $0.01-$0.03 per minute to call landlines in the US from Italy (currently $0.025 to call cells!), what I am really enjoying about the card is the ability to send text messages world-wide.

Depending on your plan (I have the Emerald Plan) it is free to send 160-character text messages to any cell phone-anywhere in the world.

Your friend on the other end won’t see your name or number as the sender (unless you purchase a virtual number with them) but just tell them “Intl Calls” is really you and you’ll be set. I’m also still trying to determine if you can receive texts from them – but I don’t think you can.

With all of their fun, Skype-like features, though, I found Enjoy Prepaid a little hard to follow. Yes, the calling card feature is fool-proof but to be able to call or text from your PC you have to download their software and there is a lot of activity and clutter on their homepage, which could make it difficult to quickly find what you need.

I’m not sure what overwhelming needs Enjoy Prepaid can meet that aren’t currently being met by online chat and Skype but I hope the best for them.

All in all, I’m *very* happy with the plan they sent me and if you’d like to try it – they are giving away free 15 minute trials to all new customers.

Enjoy and Happy Fourth of July, Americani!

All-purpose solution: the all-purpose aquatics facility uses the latest technology to create multigenerational appeal and programmability.(All-Purpose Facility)

Aquatics International July 1, 2004 | Quay, Bruce; Dunn, Jim Today’s aquatics facility, is no longer just about a single body of water. It’s about a community–and meeting all the needs of that community, from water aerobics to water slides. Building a facility that meets those needs takes careful planning and an even more careful understanding of what your community wants. But regardless of the budget or the community, every facility must be built with enough flexibility to literally be all things to all people. here planets for kids

The good news is that technology now exists to make this dream facility a reality. The bad news is that many communities still aren’t taking advantage of what’s available. That’s unfortunate because when you build an all-purpose facility, you not only create more public excitement about the project before construction, but you also ensure that it will be sustainable for the long term. It’s all about providing multigenerational activities and generating enough programming revenue to keep the facility sustainable.

By keeping those two goals in mind–multigenerational appeal and programmability–we designed what truly can be called the ultimate facility. From movable floors, to lazy rivers to a warm spa, every aspect of this facility was designed with flexibility and sustainability in mind.

Here’s a look at how all the components knit together to create long-term interest and promote healthy lifestyles.

We start with a roofing system that creates all-season usability through natural lighting. Made of an engineered transparent material, it is light enough for architectural flexibility, but durable enough to handle winter climates while retaining heat. It also has the ability to let in up to 85 percent of the sun’s UV light characteristics. These rays are what allow trees to grow and people to tan. What’s more, the material is acoustically transparent, meaning it will alleviate the echo-chamber effect found in many indoor facilities.

Next we take a fresh approach to the traditional competitive pool. At first glance, this six-lane pool looks like any other. But look closer at the design and you’ll notice three key differences: a movable floor, movable bulkhead and a wave-generation system. These three features transform the simple competition pool into an all-purpose swimming/water aerobics venue.

The movable floor goes from 10 feet deep to zero-depth with infinite positions in between. The bulkhead can move the length of the pool–and the possibilities are endless. For instance, with the movable floor, one hour you can have a competitive swimming event, and the next you can move the floor up and have a water aerobics class for seniors.

The movable bulkhead (with enough room for guards) provides the same flexibility, allowing you to divide the pool up into different sections, including both 25-yard and 25-meter competitive lengths.

This kind of flexibility also allows your facility to change with the times so that when the next water exercise craze hits, you’ll be ready.

Another aspect of this untraditional traditional pool is the wave generator. Again, the idea is the flexibility and programmability that turn flat water into fun water. The wave generator builds in more of that. Rather than just offering lifeguard training, you can now offer rough-water swim training or kayaking lessons, or any other rough-water activity you can think of. And it’s a sure-fire way to amp up your birthday party concessions. one pool that was recently renovated to include a wave system increased its per-child rate by 40 percent.

If a little wave is that popular, imagine what a real surfing/body boarding experience will offer. That’s where the flow boarding system comes in. This feature is key to attracting the biggest demographic challenge: teens. Playing off the popularity of snowboarding and skateboarding–the fastest growing sport on the planet for kids 14 to 18–the surf generator allows body boarding and stand-up riding that’s affordable in the overall context of a facility. It also ties in with the concept of life sports: sports that kids take up as youths and continue throughout their adult lives. go to web site planets for kids

From teens, let’s move on to children and the wet deck area of our dream facility. Again the deck is carefully designed with multigenerational appeal in mind. Divided into zones, the deck features the lighter sprays closer to the zero-depth entry for toddlers, with heavier gushers closer to the multilevel play structure for older kids. With its tree-house appeal, the play structure itself is a great way to build in interest for kids of all ages. And with the nearby lounge area, parents and grandparents can easily keep an eye on the kids while enjoying the sun and fun.

The adjacent lazy river also is designed for multigenerational appeal, with a current you can float along or swim against. We’ve designed this one with some additional fountains and geysers along the way that make it more fun. Those looking for more of a thrill can always zoom down the adjacent body slide–a staple of any aquatics facility these days.

When it’s time for good old-fashioned fun, there’s a nonstructured multipurpose play area. This is a great place for kids to play together or individually, and for activities such as water basketball, underwater hockey and the like. Whatever the open-water activity, it’s an important component of the facility that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Taken together, all these elements create a facility that appeals to the young, old, active and nonactive users.

While budgets must be considered, don’t forget that your customers’ willingness to provide upfront Capital has everything to do with what you design in and sell to them. Imagine trying to raise capital with just a traditional pool. Then imagine going to that same group with this plan.

Providing the right mix of features and activities at the outset is a lot more cost-effective than having to add them three or four years down the road because of customer demand or competitive pressures.

If there is one thing expats in southern Italy can agree on, it’s that we have the. best. food. in the country. Ok, ok, expats in other parts of Italy … back off! Your food rocks, too. But I have that whole southern pride thing going on and nothing makes me prouder than reviewing a cookbook that epitomizes southern Italian cooking-and Mamma Agata: Simple and Genuine does just that.

Oh yes, discerning readers, you’ve heard of Mamma Agata before. Last year my good friend Laura of Ciao Amalfi! reviewed Mamma Agata: Simple and Genuine here on My Bella Vita and she, too, loved the book.

Rather than rehash everything Laura said about how much fun the cookbook is to read, how simple and genuine the recipes are, how much you’ll truly like the author, Chiara and her family, I’m gonna tell you how this cookbook got me over a culinary hump.

You see, one of the first southern Italian dishes I fell in love with was Parmigiana di Melanzane, or eggplant parmesan. My father-in-law makes a great version and I often ask him to make it when friends or family come to visit. But I just couldn’t do it myself.

Oh, I tried.

And I tried.

And I tried some more.

But my parmigiana was always too soggy or too oily or too tasteless.

Until now.

I knew it was fate when I received my review copy of Mamma Agata’s cookbook and flipped it open to the parmigiana recipe. It spans three pages in the cookbook, making it one of the most time-consuming, if not most difficult, recipes in the book. But I was up for the challenge.

I read the recipe from top to bottom … a couple of times … and prepped for the big occasion. About half-way through my husband came in to offer a hand.

“Oh no, you don’t!” I told him.

“This is my dish … all mine. And I want all of the credit for it.”

And Mamma Agata did I deserve some credit!

For the first time in almost a decade of trying to perfect a parmigiana, my dish held tightly together. The layers were distinct and precise. The flavors harmonized and the colors sang.

Ok-maybe that’s a bit dramatic. But suffice it to say, that parmigiana was g-o-o-d.

So good, in fact, that we had it again the next day. I heated mine first … my husband ate it straight from the fridge.

So what are you waiting for? Stop droolin’ over my parmigiana and go make your own. You can get your copy of Mamma Agata: Simple and Genuine here. If you make some of the dishes, please come back and tell me. I’d love to celebrate your culinary successes with you, as well.

There is no denying English-speakers are falling in love with southern Italian cooking. Those seasonal ingredients, creative seafood dishes, spicy peppers, fresh lemons and world-class olive oil leave a lasting impression on travelers who are often anxious to recreate these plates back home. Today, Laura Thayer of Ciao Amalfi! is offering her review of a southern Italian cookbook that focuses on the unforgettable cuisine of her newly adopted home-The Amalfi Coast.

Welcome, Laura!

***

I fell in love with southern Italian cooking on my first trip to the Amalfi Coast three years ago. The simple and quick pasta sauces, grilled fish served with just a drizzle of olive oil, fresh mozzarella di bufala with sun-ripened tomatoes and basil – everything was down-to-earth and emphasized the individual flavors and fresh ingredients. Since moving to the Amalfi Coast, this love affair has continued as I have learned about and experimented with traditional dishes. I’ve picked up a few tips here and there from cookbooks and, more often, from the kitchens of family and friends.

Yet, the greatest insight I’ve had into the regional cooking of the Amalfi Coast is from the cookbook Mamma Agata – Simple and Genuine Italian Family Recipes. This gorgeous cookbook is by Chiara Lima, the Director of the Mamma Agata Cooking School on the Amalfi Coast. Chiara has gathered not only her mother Agata’s recipes, but also the history of her beautiful family.

This book is a pleasure to read, and along the way you meet Mamma Agata, her husband Salvatore, their daughter Chiara and her husband, Gennaro, and their lovely children Mario and Paola. The beautiful photographs throughout the book exude a warmth and love that carries over into the recipes. Chiara writes, “We believe deeply that cooking is love,” and this passion is evident on each and every page of her cookbook.

The recipes shared in Mamma Agata – Simple and Genuine can truly be called home cooking from the Amalfi Coast. But not just any home cooking – Mamma Agata’s famous home cooking! Opening this cookbook—illustrated throughout with beautiful photographs—feels like you’ve just stepped into the kitchen with Mamma Agata and her delightful daughter Chiara. They walk you through the preparation of each recipe with step by step directions and photographs.

For me to love a cookbook it has to be more than a list of recipes to follow. There has to be passion and a story, and Mamma Agata – Simple and Genuine tells a story of love and one family’s way of life on the Amalfi Coast. It’s a testament to their desire to share the simple and genuine cooking from this beautiful part of Italy with others through their cooking school and this beautiful cookbook. If you love Italian cooking, especially southern Italian, this book is a must for your pantry library.

It’s eerily intimate to read about the history, stories and legends of your home, to see in print the cities and towns that are in your backyard and to understand the culture that is unfolding before you in black and white. No, I’m not Calabrese, or even Italian, by heritage, but I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of hometown pride as I read through the pages of My Calabria. Yes, it is a cookbook, but for those of us in love with Calabria, it is so, so much more.

I can’t remember how I first met Rosetta Costantino, the Calabrian-born chef responsible for the My Calabria cookbook, but I remember reading about her years before in an article called Calabria from Scratch, written by Janet Fletcher, the acclaimed food writer who would become an important ingredient in Rosetta’s success.

The two joined forces and as of Monday, November 8, you, too, can have a little piece of Calabria in your kitchen. My Calabria: Rustic Family Cooking from Italy’s Undiscovered South is almost 400 pages of Calabria’s history, customs and culinary traditions intermingled with recipes-and some of the most delicious food photos I’ve ever seen-for homemade, authentic Calabrian cooking.

I received my final copy of the cookbook about a week ago and my husband and father-in-law watched as I flipped through the pages. There was an excited jolt on my right and I looked up to see my husband peering across the table at the book.

“Oooh,” he said, “Pitta con Verdura. That’s a good one. We’ll make that one for sure.”

“So, it’s an authentic cookbook, then?” I grinned at him, knowing how proud the Calabresi are of their regional recipes.

“If it has pitta con verdura in it, it is. That was one of my old favorites,” he added, a tad bit wistful and no doubt thinking of the recipes his late mother, a native of San Fili in the province of Cosenza, prepared throughout his childhood.

In addition to the pitta recipe, I’m also eager to try some new antipasto recipes, particularly the eggplant meatballs and crostini with bottarga butter, vegetable dishes, like ricotta-stuffed zucchini and potatoes with artichokes and breadcrumbs and Mamma Mia …. those Christmas desserts, especially chinule, grispelle and the flourless walnut cake.

To complete the book, there is a glossary of pasta shapes, details on stocking a Calabrian pantry and a section on Calabria’s DOC wines.

My Calabria is more than you’d expect of a cookbook and reads as much like a travel guide or (interesting!) history book as a recipe list. As the jacket cover says, “it is a cookbook for our time,” but more than that, the book is a treasured testament to our Calabria.

***

Norton Publishing is offering three My Bella Vita readers a chance to win My Calabria: Rustic Family Cooking from Italy’s Undiscovered South before they can buy it!

All this month we are featuring real Italian recipes and Mamma Mia have we had some goodies. We’ve gone from classic Pasta Aglio Olio Peperoncino to Sicilian modica and today, my sweet-toothed friends, we are in Naples, enjoying sfogliatella, straight from the Amalfi Coast’s own, Laura Thayer of Ciao Amalfi!

The first time I traveled to Naples, I had “EAT A SFOGLIATELLA” written in big letters on my Must See and Do list. If your travels haven’t taken you to Naples or the Campania region in southern Italy, then you’re in for a sweet treat when you arrive. In Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love, she came to Naples to eat the town’s world famous pizza. When I read the book, I hoped she got also got a sfogliatella while she was there. This wonderful pastry is worth the trip alone!

So, how was my first sfogliatella? Well, it wasn’t love at first bite. (Sorry, couldn’t resist!) This little pastry turned out to be quite the challenge to eat. I’ve even caught a few Neapolitans making a powdered sugar mess of themselves without seeming to notice. And it’s oh so worth it! Unless you were blessed with an unusual amount of grace, you can expect a little white shower as you bite into the crunchy pastry shell dusted lightly with powdered sugar. The reward, however, is the first taste of the luscious, cinnamon scented ricotta cheese filling dotted with tiny bits of candied fruit.

While each recipe varies slightly, my favorite sfogliatelle have the perfect balance of spices and the scent of orange, and must not be too crunchy on the outside. It’s a delicate balance. It wasn’t a pretty sight the first time I tried a sfogliatella. The crunchy outer shell poked the top of my mouth when I bit in and, unfortunately, I was wearing black that day. The second time around I began to notice the subtlety of the flavors. And it wasn’t long before the sfogliatella became my favorite Neapolitan dessert!

My top choice for sfogliatelle in Naples is the historic Gran Caffè Gambrinus located right off the Piazza Plebiscito in the center of the city. I always stop by there for a sfogliatella and one of theirdelicious espressos with hazelnut cream when I’m in Naples. But you don’t have to visit Naples to find great sfogliatella. You’ll also find them at cafés and the local pasticcerie (pastry shops)
throughout the region of Campania. Where I live in Amalfi, my favorite spots for enjoying this special treat are the small and welcoming Pasticceria Leone or at the elegant Pasticceria Pansa located right in Amalfi’s main piazza.

While the sfogliatella is considered a signature Neapolitan pastry, the birthplace of this tasty treat was in Conca dei Marini, a tiny village located in the mountains of the Amalfi Coast. In the 1600s the precursor to today’s sfogliatella was created by nuns at the Monastery of Santa Rosa. You’ll still find this variety of sfogliatella, called santarosa after the monastery, in pasticcerie throughout the region. It differs in that it’s filled with a crema pasticcera instead of ricotta and is topped with a dab of crema di amarene (sour black cherry).

While I prefer the traditional Neapolitan variety, you’ll have to do some taste testing during your travels to find your favorite spot for enjoying the best sfogliatelle. That’s your Campania travel challenge, should you choose to accept!

The Cincinnati Post (Cincinnati, OH) June 8, 2005 Byline: Jan Perry Next, I want to pass along a hello from David Jenkins at www.hub-uk.com, an incredible site that elevates the art of food preparation, fine dining and gourmet eating. His site was included in this column last year, but it has gotten bigger and better. David wrote to say thank you for the mention and to let us know the site just celebrated five-years on the Web. go to web site how to report a scam

Several more I’d like to suggest are:

* www.cns.ufl.edu/spam — You’ll find wonderful explanations and free fixes. I know there’s a lot here, but if you want to be safe without being annoyed by all the unsolicited stuff, this is a truly remarkable site to help you.

Dee Adams created this clever site — www.minniepauz.com — to help women cope with menopause (and men cope with women coping with menopause) more than eight years ago. She, wrote to invite column readers to take a look at the lighter side of the situation following the May 25 column on this usually serious topic.

Robb Perry, information manager for the American Theatre Wing, wrote to let me know that when the URL for the Tony site was moved to the electronic version of The Post, an ill-placed hyphen rendered the address unusable. (The address broke over two lines in the printed Post, thus the errant hyphen.) The correct address is www.TonyAwards.com — and if you missed the show, don’t miss the site. go to web site how to report a scam

Finally, there was this, which came in reference to the grilling column that ran on Monday. “Puny Human Jan, Hulk find out you like his Hulk Drop Martini. Hulk says good, but Puny Humans should consume in moderation.

Hulk suggests maybe write article about Celiac Disease. Hulk’s two little buddies have this — see: www.komar.org/faq/celiac_disease — Hulk thinks good to raise awareness of this.

With my Auntie Adventures a not-so fading memory, I now have time to go through my “draft” folder here at My Bella Vita and pull out some posts that are a long time coming. Reviewing a recent customer service experience I had with Continental Airlines is one of those posts.

Continental Airlines has long been my carrier of choice. They were there for my first flight-which I still have the cocktail napkin to prove, carried me safely to and from my local airport in Beaumont, Texas and have allowed me cash in a *free* international flight-when I most needed it-with my frequent flyer miles.

Overall, it’s been a good run.

So …

I was surprised earlier this year when I had trouble booking my nephew’s flight from Texas. No, It wasn’t a simple shop and select purchase. He was flying with me from Texas, then returning to Texas with friends a month later. We’d already purchased our tickets, thus, it looked like poor Cole was an unattended minor, flying solo.

It was a tough booking.

Since you’ve heard tale of lungomare love and bare boobs on the beach, you know we eventually made a purchase, thus ensuring young Cole a summer he’d never forget.

Here’s a quick recap of how that happened.

Sunday, May 2: I looked on Continental.com and found a round-trip ticket for Cole for $850. I tried to purchase the ticket, but since it appeared he was unaccompanied, the system tried to charge me additional fees. I emailed customer service using their online form.

Tuesday, May 4: When I hadn’t received a response from Continental, I rechecked their site, found the price was slightly higher and resent a message via their contact form.

Thursday, May 6: I woke up Thursday morning to an empty Inbox, checked Continental’s website and found that the price for Cole’s ticket had skyrocketed to $3,103.00, plus tax.

I immediately began searching for a “real, live, breathing person” … as I was almost certain that even in the airline industry, they do exist and quickly found that Traveler’s Best Friend, Christopher Elliott, had it covered. I discovered a cheat sheet, of sorts, with a snippet about Continental, some important email addresses and tips on who and how to approach them.

Using all of my freelance writing know-how, I drafted the sweetest, kindest email possible, addressed it to both the Director and Staff VP of Customer Care, told them about my difficulties booking the ticket, how I’d tried to reach them for several days and about the prohibitively-expensive price increase.

I told them I understood how busy they were-they’d just announced the United merger a few days earlier-and stressed how much I enjoyed flying with Continental. I included my OnePass number and confirmation numbers from my previous contact form attempts.

A couple of hours later, I received a response from the Staff VP, indicating he had read my email and telling me a Sr. Customer Service Manager would contact me that day.

That afternoon-Italy time-I received an email from Diane, a customer service manager, saying she’d used my OnePass contact information to reach me and had left a message at my home in Texas. She listed times when she was available and implied we’d be able to resolve the issue.

I immediately returned her call.

She was friendly, understanding and interested in my unique situation … in short, she was everything an airline’s customer service manager should be. She even allowed me a “grace period” to book Cole’s connecting flights (on a different airline) so I could ensure all of our tickets would match up accordingly.

A few days later we booked his flight and a day or two after that, she sent a follow-up message confirming receipt of his e-ticket.

I was impressed.

Lately, air travelers are met with increased fees, decreased services, intolerance, impatience, unkindness … a blatant lack of appreciation. Continental’s actions set the tone for my nephew’s sun-kissed summer and without them, he would have had the same ‘ole southeast Texas experience he’s had every year. So, Diane, Martin and the rest of Continental’s customer service team … thank you.

Or, as Cole would say … grascia mille!

Home Depot’s building plans await city’s input: neighbors aren’t sure they want another big box moving next door.

Wenatchee Business Journal October 1, 2002 | Schneider, Darlene Walmart is about to get a new neighbor, if Home Depot has its way. But not all the neighbors are happy about the plan to bring another big box store to the north end of town.

Traffic, noise, and lighting top the list of concerns expressed by the people living near the 12-acre parcel of land Home Depot wants to buy between Maiden Lane and Walnut Street.

Some of those concerns also have been echoed by the city planners, who have asked the company to re-examine issues concerning their traffic study.

But Home Depot believes it can be a good neighbor by adding a stoplight, building fences, planting trees and constructing the 113,689-square-foot home improvement and garden center on a slope.

According to Michael Okuma, site development coordinator, Home Depot believes community comes first and with the help of their research they’ll be able to do the best for the area.

Residents aren’t so sure.

“I’m sorry but Walmart said the same things and then they didn’t come through. It’s just hard to believe Home Depot won’t let us down,” Marlys Barrett, who lives on Tanda Lane, said at a meeting organized by a group of neighbors.

Linda Shales, who lives on Maiden Lane, thinks the road will not be able to hold the traffic.

With the addition of Home Depot, parking would no longer be allowed on Maiden Lane, and a double left hand turn lane from Maiden Lane to Wenatchee Avenue would be constructed.

According to Matt Hughart, planning associate of Kennelston and Associates hired by Home Depot, the road will be able to handle more traffic. Hughart helped conduct a traffic study in April that has been used to predict what will happen with the addition of the retail store. homedepotpromotioncodenow.com home depot promotion code

Shales also was concerned about the added traffic and noise with delivery trucks.

Okuma assured her that Home Depot would not have trucks deliver during peak hours and with walls located all around the perimeter of the store most noise would be blocked.

Rogers Street, which runs on the land, will be made straighter to run adjacent to the Home Depot. It will also be privately owned by the store.

“The public is still allowed to drive on it but the upkeep will be the responsibility of Home Depot,” Okuma said.

The entrance to the Walmart parking lot off of Maiden Lane will be moved up to align with the Home Depot entrance. A stoplight will be added to form a four-way stop.

Some neighbors were concerto about glare from lights in the parking lot using Walmart’s lights as an example.

“There will be enough lighting to be able to get into your car, but not to buy the car,” Okuma said. “There might be some glare on Wenatchee Avenue, but that is commercial.” The lights will be turned down and the walls will block most glare, he added.

Bob Rogers, who owns most of the property, a third is owned by Avis Cockrum, said if it’s not Home Depot it will be another store.

“I can’t afford to pay taxes on commercial property with a 10-acre orchard. It’ll break the bank even though I know we all would rather look at the apple orchard, it’s just not feasible,” he added.

In September, five neighboring community members voted to annex the 2.5 acres on the property still classified residential. The area east of Rogers Road to the canal behind EZ’s Burger Deluxe and D&L’s RV Center had previously been annexed. With the annexation, commercial use of the property now has to go through a public hearing process and be approved by the Wenatchee Planning Commission and the Wenatchee City Council. go to site home depot promotion code

Home Depot, the second largest retailer in the United States, next to Walmart, wants to have a store opened in Wenatchee by fall 2003. In order to do so, the application must be accepted by the planning commission in October after a public hearing and the city council in November.

Two other sites were considered by Home Depot officials. One was the Valley North Center, but last year the negotiations stopped after several months of planning. According to new releases in July 2001, the real estate director for Home Depot working on the project retired and his replacement didn’t want to pursue the area because it was too small.

Of course, something could happen again.

“Nothing is set,” Okuma said. “But we want our application to he accepted, Home Depot wants a store in Wenatchee.” The Home Depot plan * Purchase 12 acres of land between Maiden Lane and Walnut Street, just south of Walmart.

* Build a 113,689-square-foot home improvement and garden center.

* Entrance to the store would be off Maiden Lane, opposite a relocated Walmart entrance, controlled with a traffic light.

* Goal is to have the building ready for occupancy by next fall.

Schneider, Darlene

And that, my friends, is what I want to talk about today.

If you’ve spent much time on this site, you know one of my favorite destinations in Calabria is La Sila. Maybe it is because I grew up in flat-land, Texas and love the idea of driving through winding mountain roads. Maybe it is the clean, fresh air-99.9% pure, or so they say … or maybe it is the view, from every little corner, of a glistening lake, a canopy of pine trees or a village, with bright Italian roofs dotting the landscape.

Or maybe it is because *the best restaurant I’ve been to in Italy* is located there.

Yes, I said it. The best restaurant in Italy.

… or at least, the best one I’ve been to … Villa Marinella.

Last fall my husband and I accidentally discovered this place when our old-faithful Silan restaurant of choice was booked. We drove the kilometer or so to Villaggio Racise and pulled in front of Villa Marinella.

They were busy-hustling and bustling, serving diners, smiling at each other, ensuring a positive pranzo experience for everyone they saw … even us.

“Do you have a reservation?” They asked.

Blushing, we looked down at the floor … “No, we don’t.”

“That’s ok!” The handsome, if I can say so, server told us. “We’ll find something for you. Just give us a few minutes.”

And they did.

I can’t remember all of the details, only dish after dish (after dish after dish after dish) being plopped in front of us-grilled eggplant and zucchini, stuffed eggplant, homemade sausage, cheese and prosciutto, five-count ‘em … five!-different samples of primi plates, including porcini crepes and spinach cannoloni … and homemade wine-direct from their personal vineyard near Lamezia-all for, get this, €18 a person.

We’ve returned to Villa Marinella several times since that day, usually for special occasions-like my birthday in January or a beautiful spring day in May and we love to take our friends there when they are visiting.

Just last week, we went again. This time, the restaurant was bare-just one other family in the corner and Luigi, the same cute, friendly server, grinning at the door.

“Is it too late?” We asked, since it was well after 2:00 and we knew the family-only staff might want to rest before the dinner rush.

“No,” he insisted. “Not at all. Choose your seat.”

We did and he immediately came over to offer suggestions.

“Our friend is here from Spain,” my husband told him. “So let’s just do a small antipasto-only with homemade stuff.”

“It’s all ours,” Luigi told us. “How about some prosciutto, salami, cheese and a mixed hot antipasto plate to share?”

“Ok,” my husband said. “But not too much and really, only bring the stuff you make yourselves.”

“But we make it all ourselves,” Luigi repeated proudly. “Even the prosciutto, it is ours, too.”

We ok’d the antipasto order and moved on to first and second plates.

“We have gnocchi alla crema di zucca,” he said, and listed a few other pasta dishes made with mushrooms and meat.

Luckily for me, I misunderstood “all zucca,” thought he said “alla zucchine” and ordered a sampler primi plate with half of the gnocchi dish and half pasta with pancetta and mushrooms.

And it was the best lingual mistake I’ve ever made.

Luigi and one of his cousins brought out the primi plates and both boys dove head first into my plate of gnocchi.

“They are fabulous.”
“Delicious.”
“Best thing I’ve ever eaten.”

“His mom made them,” his cousin said, as she dropped off a few more plates and bounced back to the kitchen.

“Your mom?” I asked Luigi. “Mamma mia-che brava!”

“Yes,” he nodded, the same proud, patience smile fixed on us. “She makes all of the primi plates.

“My aunt makes all of the second dishes, my uncle and cousins do the cold antipasto, my sister does the hot antipasto and together my uncle and sister make desserts and “command” the kitchen. My dad organizes the main dining room and works the bar and my brother and I seat people, serve them their meals and work at the register.”

His eyes twinkled. “We all work here together. From the time we are about seven we start carrying water to people, offering them coffee, talking to our guests. We are so lucky.”

He turned toward the kitchen.

“Oh, by the way,” he told the boys, as he turned back to look at us. “The sausage you are eating is from our final pig last winter.”

He pointed out the window, “We have all of our gardens over there-and when we aren’t here, we are all together over there working in the land.”

He let out a long, happy sigh. “There is always something to do.”

He smiled, shrugged and walked away.

I continued to work on my gnocchi mountain, my head spinning in a drunken stupor, as the soft potato dumplings and light cream sauce danced on my tongue. The boys, already digging into their sausage and Silan potatoes, were quiet. There was nothing else to be said.

We all felt we had been let in on a family secret-a little slice of the Bianco family’s life-a tale that made us love them-and their homemade everything-even more.

Villa Marinella

I think the pillars of a great restaurant are fresh ingredients, consistency and service-and Villa Marinella has all three. What do you think is the most important thing to look for in a restaurant?

At a moss: Watch your steps

Lancaster New Era (Lancaster, PA) October 7, 2004 | Robert Stiffler Q Our walkway is paved with bricks and is slowly being covered with moss. Needless to say, they have become charming yet slippery. Short of regularly pouring bleach on the bricks, is there something better we could use to keep the moss under control? Someone suggested pool chemicals, but I am not familiar with those materials. – COLLEEN IN CONESTOGA A. The sure way to get rid of moss is to reduce the shade and improve air circulation in the area by pruning. Improving soil drainage, although that may not be possible in your situation, will help. site how to get rid of pimples overnight

Moss thrives in damp, shady situations. Anything you can do to improve that will help eliminate the moss. The product used most often to control moss is Roundup. However, the moss will come back if favorable growing conditions exist. I’d use Roundup now to get rid of it but then do some pruning and make other changes to get more sun and less moisture in the area.

A. Last week’s column gave detailed instructions on what you should do to your lawn this fall. Be aware that three weeks without rain in late August-early September made many lawns brown. It sounds like you may have grubs, and that requires a special treatment. A sure sign of grubs is if you can pick up the grass like a carpet. That often means grubs have eaten off the roots. Another sign is if you see a lot of birds pecking away in the grass. That means they’re finding and eating grubs.

Lancaster County extension agent Tim Elkner says to treat your lawn with a product specifically for grubs and carefully follow the directions. You can find these products in any garden center. I would treat the lawn for grubs at once and then follow the suggestions in last week’s column (to purchase a copy of the Sept. 30 Magazine section, call 291-8610) for the remainder of your lawn rejuvenation this fall.

Q. I want to find Preen but am unable to do so. I live in Lititz. – LITITZ LAWN-OWNER A. At www.lebsea.com, the manufacturers of Preen list these outlets near you: Bomberger’s Store, Route 501, Lititz; Esbenshades, Route 322, Lititz; Paul B. Zimmerman, 50 Woodcorner Road, Lititz; Stauffers of Kissel Hill, 1050 Lititz Pike, Lititz.

Q. I have so many thistles. I’d like to know how to get rid of them. I pull them up, but they come back again. Thanks. – ETHEL DEEMER, LITITZ A. In a garden or a flower bed of any kind, Roundup is the best control for thistles. They must be up and growing, and the air temperature should be above 65 degrees for Roundup to work. More than one spraying may be required. Never spray on a windy day, or other plants could be damaged.

In lawns, 2,4-D is the recommended product. I would try to find a product with the Trimec formula. It contains two other weed killers in addition to 2,4-D. More than one spray may be required. Be very careful with such formulations over the roots of trees or shrubs, for the product could damage them. see here how to get rid of pimples overnight

Q. What is the best spray to get rid of bagworms on pine trees? When is the best time to use the spray? – FRAN STOKES, MILLERSVILLE A. Best control for bagworms is picking them off and burning them or putting them in a sealed plastic bag in the garbage. Do this regularly. I know that is not always possible, but spraying sometimes does not eliminate them, because they hide inside the bag and sprays may not penetrate it. Do not toss the bags onto the ground, for eggs inside the bag will hatch and cause further problems.

Products to spray with include Orthene and Sevin. If you prefer an organic, use Bt, Bacillus thuringiensis. All of these are available in garden centers. The time to spray is mid-to-late June.

Garden cuttings Most herbs lose much of their flavor when dried. If you want fresh herbs for winter, pick their foliage before a frost, toss in a freezer bag and store in your freezer until needed. Some cooks freeze them in a cube of water.

Be sure to bring plants that have been outdoors for summer inside before a heavy frost. Some, such as Christmas cactus, should be left outdoors until a freeze is predicted, for that will help them set buds. Before bringing in any houseplant, examine it carefully for insects or their eggs. Either can create problems in a warm room. Wash in soapy water or use an insecticide outdoors, if necessary. If roots are extending outside the pot, the plant probably needs repotting.

Longwood Gardens is offering a series of environmentally friendly composting courses this fall. All are on Saturdays, starting Oct. 16. Topics include home composting, compost tea and worm composting in the house. Courses vary in cost from $39 to $59. For information, call 610-388-1000 ext. 516.

You can keep geraniums for years by bringing them indoors before a hard frost and putting them in a sunny southern window. Water a couple of times during the winter. In early May, clear out the old leaves, snip off long shoots, fertilize them with Osmocote, water and put them back outdoors to enjoy all summer. The long shoots should be allowed to lie in a warm, dry spot for a day or more so the cut ends can sear over and seal. Otherwise, the soft ends will rot if planted immediately after cutting. Don’t worry if they are allowed to sear even a week or so. Use the cuttings to fill in blank spots in the pots or plant in the garden to root and provide summer bloom. I took mine out of their pots and put them in a window box filled with sand in a sunny window in a garage that did not freeze. The secret is you must have a sunny window for wintering over.

Some of you might remember a few months ago when the Blogosphere was abuzz with the Three Best Kept Travel Secrets meme. Yours truly contributed to the meme, writing about three lesser-known places in Calabria, particularly Paola, Pietragrande, Caminia and Amantea.

Yea … that’s four. I never was good wit da math.

In an interesting twist, Tripbase contacted many of the bloggers who participated in this meme and with permission, compiled our posts into a series of free travel ebooks.

It’s been a busy week here at My Bella Vita. In addition to the four great giveaways going on, I was also contacted by CSN Stores and asked to review one of their products. They have more than 200 online stores where you can find almost anything, be it a sofa, a suitcase, shoes or kitchen supplies … so I’m pretty excited about the review.

It came at a perfect time too, since in less than two weeks, I’ll be packing up and heading back across the great wide pond we call the Atlantic to visit my family in Texas.

Yes, loyal readers, it does seem like I just got back, I agree with you on that one. But spring will soon turn to summer and the calendar doesn’t lie.

It is time.

But back to the review.

I actually get to choose which suitcase I’d like to review and I’d love to hear what you think. I’ve narrowed it down to these four carry-ons.

- Delsey Helium Zip Carry-on Suiter Trolley

- International Traveller Melbourne 21″ Carry-On

- Samsonite Winfield 20″ Spinner

- Heys USA XCASE World’s Lightest Carry-on

I’m literally weighing my options here, as having a light bag is essential for a carry-on only traveler like myself … but the World’s Lightest Carry-on doesn’t have side pockets, and I like a good side pocket in a suitcase. I also like the spinner quality of the Samsonite but the Delsey Helium also comes in raspberry red … and that’s just cute.

So won’t you help me decide?

In the meantime, be sure to enter the drawing for four Italy travel books to be given away next week.

Like many travelers, I agonize over finding the perfect hotel-the ideal resting spot that strikes the balance between making me feel at home … and making me feel pampered.

And friends, I’ve found my home away home … in Rome.

My husband and I first met Paola, the perky, bright-eyed owner of Roma Axa 27 on that fateful February night when we rushed from our home in Catanzaro to join my family in Texas.

Not only did she open her home to us, but she welcomed us with open arms-and an open heart-and I’ll always be thankful for her graciousness.

In the last seven months, I’ve visited Paola and Roma Axa 27 on several more occasions-in fact, when traveling to or through the Rome airport, I wouldn’t stay anywhere else.

This B&B is everything a small, family-run hotel should be-it is spotlessly clean, the owner is generous and friendly and the extras-such as complimentary in-room bottled water, tea and crackers make it the perfect place to stop-over when traveling through Rome.

Both of the rooms have a private bath-one with en-suite bath-and transfers to and from the airport are included in the price-which ranges from €35-€40 per person.

There is a piazza located about 300 meters from Roma Axa 27, where travelers can venture to the heart of Rome via a 30-minute bus ride or choose to shop, have dinner or enjoy an evening passeggiata.

You can read more about Roma Axa 27 at RomeAirportAccommodations.com. To make a reservation or to check availability, email Paola at roma.axa.27 (at) gmail (dot) com or call (39) 340 3586057.

Amtrak Backs Off Cutback Threat

AP Online April 5, 2002 | LAURENCE ARNOLD, Associated Press Writer 00-00-0000 WASHINGTON (AP) _ Amtrak, citing signs of help from Congress, backed away Friday from its threat to issue notices that would allow it to cut its long-distance train network as early as this fall.

Instead, the railroad sent an update letter about its continuing quest to win $1.2 billion in federal funds for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. The letters went to governors of the 46 states Amtrak serves.

Amtrak President George Warrington wrote that he is encouraged by the response of lawmakers. However, he added, “uncertainties associated with the legislative process” mean Amtrak must prepare for the possibility that it will not receive enough money to maintain current service.

He reiterated that the 18 trains in its long-distance network are “at high risk” and said other routes could also be cut if Amtrak’s appropriation is too low.

The 18 trains serve Amtrak’s longest routes and are among its biggest money-losers. Without them, travelers no longer could get on a train in the Northeast and connect all the way to California, or board in Florida and reach the Pacific Northwest.

Amtrak spokesman Bill Schulz said the intent of Warrington’s letter was to warn the governors about Amtrak’s uncertain future _ and the possibility of service cuts _ without creating confusion among prospective travelers that could result from elimination notices. amtrakpromotioncodenow.com amtrak promotion code

Warrington announced Feb. 1 that Amtrak would issue formal notices by March 29, reserving the authority to cut routes when the new fiscal year begins. Amtrak is generally required by law to give 180 days’ notice before it discontinues train service.

But in his letter to the governors, Warrington said such formal notice is not necessary “in circumstances like this, where train service rests on the availability of federal appropriations.” Transportation Department Inspector General Kenneth Mead reported in January that Amtrak lost $1.1 billion in 2001, the most in its 30-year history, and had made no progress toward meeting Congress’ 1997 order to wean itself from annual government operating subsidies by this December.

Since Warrington’s February announcement, Amtrak has made headway in convincing federal officials that the nation’s passenger rail system needs more money.

“My sense is that there’s now a sense of urgency in Congress that wasn’t there before,” said Amtrak Vice Chairman Michael Dukakis, the former governor of Massachusetts.

The Bush administration has proposed $521 million for Amtrak in fiscal year 2003, but Amtrak has received some key backing in its pleas for more money. web site amtrak promotion code

Mead said the railroad cannot maintain current operations with the funding proposed by Bush, the same amount Amtrak received this year. Deputy Transportation Secretary Michael Jackson told Congress it will take $2.5 billion to $3 billion in annual funding for rail “just to keep what we have.” And 28 senators have signed on to a bill by Sen. Ernest Hollings, D-S.C., that would devote $4.6 billion a year for the next five years to Amtrak operations, renovations to Amtrak-owned tracks in the Northeast and development of new high-speed corridors around the country.

A new proposal in the works by House Transportation Committee leaders would authorize $1 billion for Amtrak’s capital and operating expenses next year. Congress also would cover Amtrak’s annual obligation _ about $160 million _ to pay benefits for rail industry retirees.

In exchange, Amtrak would have to begin submitting an annual business plan to the Department of Transportation listing ridership, revenue and expense targets for individual business units and long-distance trains.

A spokesman for House Railroad subcommittee chairman Jack Quinn, R- N.Y., said the bill would buy Congress one more year to come up with a long-term plan for Amtrak and passenger rail.

___ On the Net:

Last week I was surprised-and honored-to be named one of the 15 great new travel blogs over at Inside the Travel Lab. Besides being flattered that other travel bloggers read My Bella Vita, I’m happy to know that all of my hard work, research and writing is going to good use.

So today, I’m passing the torch … here are 15 of my favorite travel blogs, in no particular order, that you are guaranteed to love!

- Killing Batteries – Possibly the funniest travel blog I read, Killing Batteries is written by professional travel writer, Leif Pettersen who has penned three guidebooks for Lonely Planet. Read more about him here. I promise. The guy is funny.

- Everything Everywhere - Fabulous photos and text by Gary Arndt, who has been traveling the world-and blogging about it-since 2007. But, I’m not the only one who thinks Gary rocks. He has been nominated and/or won more than two dozen travel blog awards in the last two years. Check it out.

BIDERMANN FILES FOR CHAPTER 11

The Record (Bergen County, NJ) July 18, 1995 | ADAM GELLER, Staff Writer ADAM GELLER, Staff Writer The Record (Bergen County, NJ) 07-18-1995 BIDERMANN FILES FOR CHAPTER 11 By ADAM GELLER, Staff Writer Date: 07-18-1995, Tuesday Section: BUSINESS Edition: All Editions — 3 Star, 2 Star P, 2 Star B, 1 Star Late, 1 Star Early site gold toe socks

Bidermann Industries — the company behind Ralph Lauren women’s clothing, Arrow shirts, and Gold Toe socks — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday and announced plans to close its Secaucus offices.

The facility, which has about 100 workers, will be phased out during the next six months to cut costs, the company said.

Some workers in the Secaucus facility, which provides back-office operations for Bidermann’s New York headquarters, will be offered positions at company plants, mostly in the South. Those losing their jobs will be offered severance packages, the company said.

The closing is part of an overall move to decentralize management at Bidermann, which employs 5,000 people nationwide. The company also plans to consolidate operations at some of its plants but does not expect large-scale layoffs.

Bidermann’s bankruptcy filing is largely the result of its purchase five years ago of apparel maker Cluett Peabody & Co., which saddled the company with heavy debt, said spokesman Robert Mead. website gold toe socks

“We basically paid too much for that acquisition and put too much burden on the company to finance it,” Mead said Monday.

The bankruptcy filing should not affect the brand names controlled by Bidermann, the U.S. subsidiary of a French apparel manufacturer.

“Our primary objectives are to maximize operating performance across our organization and put in place a more appropriate capital structure at the corporate level so that our strong brands can meet their full potential in the marketplace,” said Bryan P. Marsal, Bidermann’s chairman and chief executive.

Bidermann has secured $75 million in debtor-in-possession financing from a lending group that will allow the company to continue normal operations during bankruptcy proceedings.

Some of you might remember last fall when Michelle of Bleeding Espresso and I kicked off a blog tour for Calabrian-American journalist and book author, Justin Catanoso. Justin’s debut book, My Cousin the Saint had just hit the shelves and my newly-found Calabria pride encouraged me to share this book-and the story of Calabria’s newest saint-with my little corner of the blogosphere.

I’ve actually had the book for some time, sitting on my bookshelf, with Padre Gaetano‘s hand-pained image and haloed face smiling out at me, but between other book reviews, Italian language classes and the non-stop adventures that come with life in Calabria, I hadn’t yet read it.

And I’m so glad I waited.

I am a strong believer in the power of timing and of the idea that things come to you when you most need them. You see, I wasn’t quite honest in my introduction when I told you it was my Calabria pride that motivated my previous posts. The truth is-I liked Justin. He is a newspaper man, the lone male in a family of women, a writer. He reminded me of my own father and for that, I wanted to see him succeed.

I can’t explain why I picked up the book when I did … perhaps it was motivated by my impending trip back to the US and by the fact I’d be returning to a home no longer shared with my father, but it resonated with me in ways I couldn’t have understood a year ago.

From Patrizia’s miracle description on page one, through Saint Gaetano’s vision of a better Calabria, to Justin’s personal struggle of coping with the loss of an immediate family member … I was absorbed. And I couldn’t stop reading.

I found myself laughing, biting my nails and crying-all on an airplane, thankyouverymuch-as the story of Justin’s American family intertwined with the Italian ancestors his grandfather had left behind. His depiction of southern Italy, both the landscape and its people, were flawless and more than once I recognized my own Italian family members in his descriptions.

But I think what resounded with me the most was Justin’s unending search for faith. Although I’ve spent my life as a more-devout-than-not Catholic, these last six months have challenged my faith, and I understood Justin’s doubts-and hopes!-that faith can be restored.

I’m not sure if he meant for his book to motivate Catholics or re-inspire the faithful, but I can’t help but think there is a humble, Calabrese parish priest who is happy about it … who is smiling down on us from above as he is hurriedly answers his newly-sainted hot line.

Want to learn more about My Cousin the Saint? You can peruse Justin’s photos of Reggio Calabria, the village of Chorio and Saint Gaetano’s canonization, visit Justin’s website or read other reviews.

The best thing about living in a foreign country is the number of great people you meet. Expats abroad tend to form an alliance based on a mutual understanding, or in many cases misunderstanding of the new society and having that network is an invaluable source of comfort for many of us.

The second best thing about living in a foreign country is the new food … especially in a country like Italy, where fresh produce and homemade dishes are celebrated and appreciated. And expected!

So when you put best thing #1 with best thing #2 and you find a fellow expat who is not only a good listener and helpful friend, but who is also a fantastic chef with mouthwatering recipes … well, you’ve hit the mother load.

And so we have.

Judy Witts Francini has been a Tuscan chef for 25 years and although we have yet to meet in person, I’m looking forward to the day we can shake hands, or well, we are in Italy, so kiss cheeks, share a glass of wine and she can cook for me. (What? She’s a pro?)

Until that day, though I’ll have to get by with her new cookbook “Secrets From my Tuscan Kitchen.” And let me just say, I think I’ll manage just fine.

The cookbook is a collection of 93 of Judy’s favorite Tuscan recipes and features pasta and risotto dishes, second plate meals, recipes for homemade bread and pasta and an extensive dessert section.

I’ve already jumped into the book and prepared a few summer favorites while my husband is planning ahead for the cold-weather months to try some of the heartier Tuscan stews and soups … and he’s been eyeing her homemade gnocchi recipe, as well.

The recipes are in American measurements, but the front-of-the-book conversions make it easy to whip up these treats, regardless of which continent you are on.

So if you are looking for a new cookbook that won’t gather dust on your shelf, head over to DivinaCucina and order your copy today. Or better yet, buy two and share one with the Tuscan wanna-be chef in your life.

Buon Appetito!

So what do you do if you are in one of Italy’s most picturesque cities and find yourself with a hankering for two, three, or even four scoops of homemade southern Italian gelato?

You hit the beach.

Just a few blocks down the lungomare from the tiny green kiosk of the Gelateria Cesare is the ultra-modern, uber-trendy Cremeria Sottozero-today’s stop on the Tour del Gelato.

Sottozero is a full service Italian bar that serves pastries, apertivi, coffee, granita and of course … gelato.

The soft, fluffy pillows of gelato consumed more than four cases, each offering a new, exciting flavor to tempt our taste buds.

Licorice? Good. But not for me …

Chili pepper? Absolutely! Oh shoot-they are all out.

Sapori di Sicilia? A mix of the best flavors of Sicily? Count me in!

After agonizing over this life-and-death-type decision, I choose sapori di sicilia and coconut. I was not disappointed.

“So what do you think?” our Reggio guide asked as she took another bite from her coppetta. “Who wins? Cesare or Sottozero?”

I looked around the group as my new friend’s young Brazilian friend joined us to hear the results.

“Two votes here for Sottozero,” she said as she pointed to her husband and herself.

“Me, too,” one of the Americans said. “I think.”

“I can’t decide,” the other American said.

They all looked at me.

“Well,” I began, as I licked my cone just as the Sicilian pistachio blend started dripping down my hand. “I like the atmosphere at Cesare. It is small and quaint and cozy. Sottozero is too modern.”

They all nodded.

“I also like the staff at Cesare. They are friendlier and more welcoming.”

They all looked at each other. Giggle. Giggle. Laugh.

“What?” I asked, obviously missing the joke.

They pointed to my new friend’s Brazilian friend who was, by the way, not laughing and I noticed his shirt for the first time.

There in the upper left corner of his black striped vest was the word “Sottozero.”

Gulp.

“Uhm … uhm …,” I said, quickly trying to back peddle my way out of this situation. “I meant, uhm … the staff here is great, too … maybe he doesn’t speak English?”

“He speaks English.”

“Well,” I declared as I pulled my friends away from the bar and towards the beach. “What I was going to say is that Cesare is precious and I loved the people-but the gelato at Sottozero is richer, creamier and well … more sinfully delicious.”

So there you have it. Four votes for Sottozero and one undecided. And according to Sottozero’s logo … there is really only one choice.

But if you are ever on or around the Reggio Calabria lungomare, I think you should do the taste-test yourself because, really, when gelato is this good … who’s to say one is sweeter or which group of people is really friendlier?

89100 Reggio Calabria (Lido)

Italy

* Visitors to Catanzaro no longer have to drive the two hours south to Reggio for Sottozero gelato. A new kiosk recently opened in the new Centro Commerciale Le Fontane and all of their classic tastes, including the mousse-like semifreddo flavors are available there.

County Adopts Policy to Keep Deputies on the Job

The Washington Post April 22, 1999 | Maria Glod The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors yesterday approved a policy requiring recruits who leave the Sheriff’s Department within a year of graduating from the law enforcement academy to repay part of their training costs.

The policy is aimed at keeping newly trained deputies from leaving the department for higher-paying law enforcement jobs in nearby counties. Sheriff’s officials have long complained that it is difficult to retain new officers because Loudoun’s starting salary — even with a recent increase — lags behind that of deputies in Alexandria and Arlington and Fairfax counties. As a result, county officials said, Loudoun too often pays to train employees who take their expensive skills elsewhere within a few months.

Sheriff’s officials estimate that in a deputy’s first six months on the job, more than $10,000 is spent on uniforms, equipment and tuition at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy in Ashburn. “We can’t afford to keep on paying to put deputies through training and have them go somewhere else to work,” Supervisor David G. McWatters (R-Broad Run) said of the new policy. “It’s a way of protecting the taxpayers’ money. It’s a very common-sense way to do it.” Sheriff’s officials said they have not tracked the number of deputies who leave the department within a year of graduation. In a March 23 letter to board Chairman Dale Polen Myers (R-At Large), Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson said two deputies who work in the jail recently left for other law enforcement jobs. Although the recently approved budget includes a 9.5 percent pay raise for sworn deputies, sheriff’s officials worry that this year’s newcomers will be even more likely to pursue jobs in neighboring counties because, for the first time, recruits are being certified initially in both patrol and corrections rather than one or the other. “Our guys come out of {the academy} in six months, and they are certified in both corrections and patrol,” Maj. John Patton said. “It makes them more attrac tive as candidates in other jurisdictions because they are already trained.” Patton also noted that there is no shortage of jobs in area law enforcement agencies. “We’re still trying to hire positions that were approved a year ago,” Patton said. “Everybody is having troubles trying to recruit people. We’re trying to hire for a lot of positions in the jail, and sometimes a guy or a girl comes in and says, `I can go to Fairfax and work on the streets for more money.’ ” Under the new policy, a deputy who leaves within six months of graduation will have to reimburse the county $5,000. A deputy who leaves between six and 12 months after graduation will have to pay back $2,500. Those who voluntarily leave the academy during training will be required to pay $1,250. Money collected under the policy will be added to the county’s general fund. County staff said they do not have an estimate on how much money the policy might generate. Other area departments have similar policies. “We have been doing it for years,” said Alexandria sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Dave Rocco. “We invest a lot of time, energy and money to hire as well as to train, and it takes up to six months to train. If they leave voluntarily, we feel we should recoup some of the money.” Rocco said the policy has been used on three recruits. He said he did not know whether the reimbursements were made by the recruits or the agencies that hired them. But he said the Alexandria department does not offer to reimburse new employees’ previous departments. The policy has caught the attention of some Loudoun towns. Purcellville Town Manager Robert W. Lohr Jr. said the Town Council has “talked seriously” about implementing a similar policy. “I definitely foresee the town moving in that direction,” Lohr said. “Training . . . has a very big impact on a small community.” Leesburg Police Chief Keith A. Stiles said he has delivered a copy of the county policy to town officials. “I would encourage the town of Leesburg to look at this,” Stiles said. lawenforcementjobsnow.net law enforcement jobs site law enforcement jobs

Remember last week when I told you all about my day trip to Reggio Calabria? Oh you know … where I found those buns of bronze?

Well I have a confession to make. And no, it has nothing to do with those big naked men … but it is just as sinful.

Reggio Calabria is famed for not one, but two world-class gelaterie. Everyone in town has their favorite and they’ll venomously defend their gelato maker of choice … or die of insulin overdose trying.

You see, I’m a gelato connoisseur myself so I wasn’t content to take the advice of Reggio day-trippers who had come before me. I had to taste them and see how they compared to my longtime favorite, Marron Glacés.

So in the name of research-I tried them both.

Today’s stop on the Tour del Gelato leads us to Gelateria Cesare, located in a bright green kiosk near the lungomare and just steps away from both the Reggio Calabria Lido train station and the National Museum of Magna Grecia.

For more than 50 years, Gelateria Cesare has been dishing out what they claim-and what at least 50% of Reggio Calabrians claim-is the best gelato in town and with about three dozen flavors, including hard-to-find low-fat and sugar-free varieties, I can’t say they are wrong.

Chocolate and cream flavors more your thing? Check these babies out.

Cesare’s has even had some high-profile taste testers give them the thumbs up.

Perhaps what was even more impressive to me than the creamy gelato and full, rich flavors was Cesare’s staff and atmosphere. The kiosk is barely large for 10 people and the staff-laughing, joking and smiling-eagerly offer samples while you search their icy glass containers for your favorite flavors.

They have four sizes available, including the mini cup (€1.50) which is perfect for a post-pizza dessert or a lazy afternoon.

Gelateria Cesare

Piazza Indipendenza

Reggio Calabria (Lido)

Calabria

In order to best compare Cesare to Marron Glacés, I chose my two favorite flavors-pistachio and spagnola. They were sweet, cold and refreshing and the black cherry left just a twinge of a bittersweet aftertaste. But how did Cesare hold up against Reggio-famed Sottozero? Come back on Wednesday to find out!

Immigration and Naturalization Service v. Chadha 462 U.S. 919 (1983)

Encyclopedia of the American Constitution January 1, 2000 IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE v. CHADHA 462 U.S. 919 (1983) Immigration and Naturalization Service v. Chadha cast serious doubt on the use of the legislative veto, a device by which Congress seeks to retain control over the use of delegated powers. Chadha involved a provision in the immigration and nationality act that permitted either house of Congress, by resolution, to overturn orders of the attorney general suspending deportation of aliens. website immigration and naturalization

The Supreme Court held, 7???2, that congressional review of such cases was legislative in character, and was therefore subject to the provisions of Article I requiring the concurrence of both houses and an opportunity for the President to exercise his veto power before the resolution can have the force of law. The majority opinion, by Chief Justice warren e. burger, declared that the one-house legislative veto violated the constitutional principles of separation of powers and bicameralism. in our site immigration and naturalization

Justice byron r. white, dissenting, ascribed to the decision much greater scope than did the majority. White asserted that the Chadha decision effectively invalidated every legislative veto provision in federal law. A majority in future cases, however, may choose not to apply the Chadha rationale to two-house legislative vetoes or to legislative vetoes of agency actions that are clearly legislative rather than executive or quasi-judicial. It would be curious indeed if administrative agencies promulgating regulations with the force of law were freed from congressional oversight by a Court intent on preserving the separation of powers and bicameralism.

It is not rocket surgery. Or brain science, as might be more the case with my latest read, The Cardboard Universe, by Christopher Miller. I struggled with the book. And with the direction of this review.

The dialogue-free Cardboard Universe is written in an encyclopedia format-522 pages!-and spoofs the life of sci-fi writer, Philip K. Dick. The novel chronicles the life of the fictitious author Phoebus K. Dank, who wrote 57 (official) novels, including ”Big Dick,” featuring a character named none other than, Philip K. Dick. It is all very clever.

The novel starts by introducing the dueling narrators, William “Bill” Boswell, an author, lecturer and ex-roommate of Dank who is widely considered the nation’s leading Dankian and Owen Hirt, a poet and onetime friend of Dank who is the lone suspect in the author’s murder.

As Boswell points out early in the encyclopedia’s preface, “Dank’s fiction was a lifelong effort to make sense of his own life …. his fiction was always heartfelt, and even the tales he set in other galaxies were usually provoked by doings in his own backyard.”

And I would expect no less. Writer’s often reflect on their lives and search within their inner circles for inspiration, and where I might find material at my local language school or by speaking with my Italian father-in-law, Dank was inspired to create alternative universes-where a woman can transplant her mind and memories to a new, younger, more slender body every two to three years (to deal with her eating disorder), where people agree to battle “Sadiators” (pronounced sad e aters) in a “suicide duel,” where the goal is to kill your opponent with sadness by spitting sharp-tongued comments at them until they kill themselves, or even his novel, “And How Will I Know You?” where a virus called “the Proteu strain” infects the world’s population so everyone’s physical characteristics change each night as they sleep.

I hereby proclaim Christopher Miller a creative genius. It is safe to say his imagination isn’t limited to the 57 book summaries he invents in The Cardboard Universe … and as I writer I admire that. I respect that. No, I’m actually in awe of that.

But even with my admiration of his talent and creativity, the book didn’t grab me. It didn’t pull me in. It didn’t make me want to miss sleep, skip meals or hide in the bathroom to get through the next entry. It was only when I stopped pushing myself to read each encyclopedia entry in chronological order-like you’d normally read a novel-that I was drawn in. I finally got the humor other book reviewers found and was able to enjoy the book.

The Cardboard Universe is especially recommend for sci-fi lovers or Philip K. Dick fans or for those of you who are willing to invest a little time and are looking for something different in your next book purchase.

Have you read The Cardboard Universe? What did you think of it? You can purchase your own copy here.

Buon Weekend!

The Orchard Celebrates the Release of Mojo Nixon’s Latest Album.

Health & Beauty Close-Up November 1, 2009 In support and celebration of the release of Mojo Nixon’s latest album “Whiskey Rebellion,” The Orchard, a full service media company specializing in the distribution of music and video entertainment, on October 6 announced that Mojo’s entire catalog would be available to download at no cost, exclusively from Amazon MP3. amazon promotional code

Since this announcement, The Orchard reported that the promotion has led to more than one million downloads of Mojo’s music. The downloads were available at amazon.com/mojo until October 28th.

“The successful execution of this promotion has generated tremendous awareness for Mojo,” said Brad Navin, EVP and General Manager of The Orchard. “This is a showcase of how The Orchard, as a nimble and forward-thinking company, has the ability to orchestrate trendsetting promotions for our clients. The success of this promotion will be measured by its long-term benefits, not the short-term risks, and our expectation is that it will generate sales momentum.” Mojo Nixon’s current catalog includes 11 albums and 144 tracks. The downloads for this music during the two weeks of the Amazon promotional period amounted to a 23,000 percent increase from paid downloads across all digital retail networks in the United States during the first half of 2009. this web site amazon promotional code

Mojo Nixon is currently a full-time on-air personality on Sirius XM Satellite radio hosting a daily music show on the Outlaw Country channel, a weekly political talk show on the Raw Dog Comedy Channel and a weekly racing show on the NASCAR channel.

It is that time of year again … schools are wrapping up, kids are heading to the nearest watering hole and their parents and friends are planning summer BBQs and outdoor picnics.

But just in case you don’t have time-or the desire to melt away under the glaring Texas sun-you have another option … especially if you are in southeast Texas.

Located on Highway 96 between Silsbee and Beaumont in Lumberton, Dippity’s serves up the biggest, freshest, juiciest burgers in southeast Texas … or so says my husband whose sole mission on each of his Texas trips is to find the best burger in town.

Like Burger King, you can have it your way-with lettuce, maters, mayo, even jalapenos all stacked on fresh ground beef and sandwiched between homemade buns … Who could ask for more in a burger?

Sink your teeth into that baby. Dippity’s famous Texas Tummy Tackler …

Or this one … for smaller tummies.

Dippity’s is located in a strip mall with an unassuming facade-neon sign excluded-and no frills interior, but the drastically affordable prices (the standard-sized burger is $3.89) and friendly hometown staff prove that Dippity’s is nothing more than your neighborhood burger joint-with kick ass burgers.

But don’t take our word for it-if you are in the area, check it out yourself.
May all of your burgers today be Dippity-good burgers … Happy Memorial Day!

Thomson’s trims: Terminus? Chain clustering continues

NewsInc November 25, 1996 An agreement in principle for a three-way swap between Thomson, Hollinger and Cox for nine papers on Nov. 1 largely continued the current vogue of clustering among chains. web site greenville daily news

Hollinger left the deal with the lion’s share of readers, picking up Thomson’s Mt. Vernon, IL, Register-News, the Enid, OK, News & Eagle, and the St. Joseph, MI, Herald-Palladium. The papers’ total circulation is about 67,000.

“We viewed the papers separately and apart from synergies” with other Hollinger operations, said Ken Serota, Hollinger’s vice president of law and finance. That said, he added, the Mt. Vernon daily is close to Hollinger operations in southern Illinois, and the Enid daily fits neatly into the company’s belt of papers there.

Thomson, in turn, scored two of Hollinger’s Indiana dailies, the Greensburg Daily News and the Hartford City News-Times, as well a nearby twice-weekly, the Batesville Herald Tribune. In a press release, Thomson said those papers, with a combined circulation of about 12,000, will join the chain’s Indiana strategic marketing group of dailies located in Logansport, Kokomo, and Anderson.

Cox acquired Hollinger’s Tarboro, NC, Daily Southerner and Thomson’s Marshall, TX, News Messenger, with combined circulation of about 15,000. The latter fits in with Cox operations in Longview and Nacogdoches, and the former will fit in with the North Carolina group Cox began with its Greenville Daily Reflector acquisition (NewsInc., Jan. and continued when it swapped six Arizona papers for two of Thomson’s in North Carolina on Aug. 20 (NewsInc., Sept. 2).

The three-way deal also involved an undisclosed amount of cash.

“We’re trying to knit together clusters of papers that we think can serve good growth markets,” said Cox Newspapers president Jay Smith, in outlining the clustering strategy. Circulation of the papers in question “may on their own be 10,000 or 15,000, but if you can put enough together, that gives you the opportunity to sell ads to a much larger market and, potentially, to operate them a lot more efficiently.” The news followed on the heels of the Oct. 29 announcement that Thomson had reached an agreement in principle to sell three papers–the Petersburg, VA, Progress-Index, the Shamokin, PA, News-Item, and the Valley View, PA, Citizen-Standard–to the Lynett family that owns the Scranton, PA, Times. go to website greenville daily news

With these deals, and with 11 papers it sold to MediaNews and Ogden Newspapers earlier this fall, Thomson has dealt with 16 of the 29 non-strategic dailies it put up for sale or trade on Sept. 20 (NewsInc., Oct. 14).

According to Thomson president Dick Harrington, another announcement will follow shortly after you read this, probably around Nov. 30, when the company will make public further transactions from its sale list.

Following that forthcoming announcement, Harrington said, “all are accounted for except for nine, in the sense we’ve got agreed-upon prices and, most likely, letters of intent” to purchase the other remaining newspapers.

The other nine, Harrington added, “are in negotiations, but we haven’t finalized price or letters of intent.” Unrelated off-the-record talks with sources at other newspaper groups confirmed that at least two major chains are in negotiations with Thomson.

Though August’s Thomson-Cox swap featured unspecified other considerations as part of its terms, Smith said that, save for the cash Cox netted in that deal, there’s no connection between the two transactions. Those considerations, he said, may be made public by mid-December.

Although Rome Week is technically finita, I do have a few straggling notes hanging around in my notebook itching to hit the big screen. Or, well, the computer screen.

You see, as a B&B owner I gravitate towards other B&Bs and nine times out of 10, prefer them to big hotels. I love the personal service, cozy atmosphere and friendly environment. Plus, I like to support the little people and send out those good Karmic vibes whenever I can.

On the other hand, I could also be accused of being overly critical and holding other B&Bs to sky-high standards. And it is true. I’m guilty.

Such is the case with the Cesare Balboa Suites in Rome.

On the surface there is nothing wrong with this B&B. They are located on Via Cesare Balboa, near Via Cavour, about 10 minutes from Termini train station. And as you can see, they are located inside a majestic palazzo on a quiet side street.

Just to be fair-and to keep things positive-I’m going to list my cons first so I can end on a positive note.

Cons

- The information we were given at booking said
* They had 24-hour reception
* They had hairdryers in the rooms
* They were near the Colosseum
* They accept credit cards

In reality, we saw them twice after we checked in, they didn’t offer a hairdryer until I asked and we were 15 minutes on foot from the Colosseum.

Now, I don’t mind a B&B without 24-hour reception, heck-we don’t have it! But I’m not into false advertisements, either.

I also don’t believe their credit card machines were “broken.” I believe they wanted us to pay in cash so they 1) wouldn’t have to report us on their taxes or 2) wouldn’t have to pay the credit card fees. If you don’t want to accept credit cards-don’t say you will.

- They deliver breakfast to your room-which is romantic!-but you have to arrange the time in advance and since they don’t really have 24-hour reception, changing your time can be a challenge.

Pros

- The room was spacious and decorated in antique Roman-style. It was warm and welcoming.

- The staff members, a husband and wife team, were friendly and accommodating. He offered us an umbrella when we checked-out, even though he knew we couldn’t return it. They smiled a lot and had maps of the area readily available.

- The price. We paid €70 a night for a double in Rome and although they weren’t really by the Colosseum like they advertise, they did have a good location.

In the end, I think my disappointment with Cesare Balboa Suites boils down to my expectations-expectations they set by making promises they didn’t keep. Had they not advertised that location, hairdryers, credit card machine and 24-hour reception, I’d have booked them anyway-and that “Con” list would’ve been a lot less imposing.

I am, admittedly, a critical customer. But what about you? What expectations do you have for hotels and B&Bs and what could they do to either cement your loyalty or send you running?

INDUSTRY 212: IN THE PARK.

WWD January 15, 2004 | Greenberg, Julee NEW YORK — Industry 212, held here at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from Sunday to Tuesday, showcased an array of brands and a mix of markets.

Whether it was the newest bracelet from Rebel Designs or a trendy new T-shirt from Plain Jane, Industry 212 had a lot to offer buyers looking to fill their stores for summer. But it wasn’t just retailers walking the floor, as high schoolers on assignment browsed the aisles to learn about the business (and do some shopping when the teacher wasn’t looking). website oasis day spa

For many of the teens at the show, the first stop was a new resource out of Albany, N.Y., called House of Bimbo, a line of kitschy T-shirts and tank tops carrying sayings like “Boy Beater,” “I Am NY” and “Local Talent.” Owner Diva de Loayza allowed the teens to buy samples.

“It’s less to carry back home and they love to shop, so it’s great,” she said as she sold one brown baseball shirt with “Ghetto” plastered across the front.

“Only $15? OK,” said the teen shopper reaching for her wallet.

As de Loayza closed the sale, she explained that she started the company almost two years ago when she was attending Parsons School of Design here. She moved to her hometown of Albany to start House of Bimbo, which wholesales for $11 to $25. At this show, she said she was booking a lot of tanks and Ts in pink, and preppy polos in blue and pink. site oasis day spa

“There’s a lot of pink this season,” she said. “Everyone wants pink.” At young contemporary firm Blue Plate, long patchwork skirts were booking, as were short bandanna print skirts in pink and blue. Also booking were printed halters with beading detail and crochet dresses with drawstring waists. The Blue Plate collection wholesales for $20 to $30.

As for accessories, Seychelles was offering an array of styles, from black pointed flats to pink high heels and flip-flops.

“People are picking up a lot of pink this season,” said Kevin Morris, sales representative for the brand. “From open toe heels to ballerina flats, pink is the color.” Morris said retailers are looking to pick up shoes that go well with jeans, since they are selling so many.

“That’s what the girls are wearing, so we make the heels to wear with them,” he said.

Nearby, Rebel Designs was selling leather cuffs accented with crystals and antique brass. Wholesaling between $24 and $36.50, designer Gina Riley customizes each piece to the store, allowing for a choice among about 12 different crystals and leather colors.

But it wasn’t only the products buyers were looking to pick up. They took mini-breaks between appointments for a massage from the Oasis day spa, makeup reapplication from the Macy’s Herald Square Chanel counter and a smoothie from the smoothie bar. For those looking for some business advice, seminars were held throughout the three days, such as “Developing a Celebrity Following and Leveraging Its Benefits to Fuel Your Bottom Line” and “Color Therapy: Defining Your Retail Space Through Color.” Featuring more than 500 apparel and accessories exhibitors, Industry 212 showcased some of the fastest-growing segments of the marketplace. The show attracted more than 8,000 buyers from specialty and department stores, national chains, mass merchants and mail order and Internet sites, as well as buying offices.

Industry 212 is an affiliate of MAGIC International, a subsidiary of Advanstar Communications.

How many of you choose a new travel destination then run right out and purchase a new guide book? Come on … you can tell me.

Well then, how many of you choose a new travel destination, then run right to your laptop, plop down with a grande Starbucks caramel latte and Google, “Where to go to in …?”

Yea, ok. I’m with you (and that caramel latte is sounding pretty good about now). But is this really the best approach? As social media continues to expand our ever-changing habits what old routines will we keep and which not-so-distant patterns will become a far-flung memory?

Travelbooking is a first-of-its-kind site that allows users to search for travel-related content, pull online travel guides from its sister site, So Much World, save that information, create a personalized travel guide and share it all with their friends.

So I thought I’d give it a try.

I simulated recreating my Central American honeymoon and was disappointed to find there wasn’t information on my first country of choice-Belize.

So I thought I’d stick with something bigger. And better. The Bel Paese.

You can imagine my thrill at searching “Italy” and finding that the first link on the page was none other than My Bella Vita. But I dug deeper and searched for Rome. Admittedly, I only spent about 15 minutes playing on the site and while they do have some good bookmarks (ahem!), it is possible the site is just too young to have the depth needed to compete with guide books.

But I’ll be watching them.

And you should, too. In fact, here is a short video-less than two minutes-that describes the site’s interface and usability.

So what do you think? Is this the future of travel guides or will people keep buying the book? Since I have my heart set on writing a Calabria Guide Book one day … I hope there is room for both.

Let’s head over and see what Robin has going on this week at My Melange.

Until next time … Buon Viaggio!

It is hump day here at My Bella Vita and we are smack in the middle of Rome Week, and with all of the sightseeing and wallet-watching we’ve had going on the last couple of days … I bet you are getting hungry.

I know I am.

Many people think a good vacation boils down to one thing-the food-and that your experience with that food can make or break your vacation.

While I’m not the kind of traveler to push it that far, I do know people who have all but written off a country because of their cuisine-or in some cases, their coffee … but I digress.

Rome doesn’t have issues with food or coffee, so as long as you know where to go, you’ll be set.

La Pietra Scheggiata

Saturday night our Roman friends invited us to join them for their typical date night dinner in Trastevere, but after 45 minutes of circling the neighborhood in search of the ever-elusive parking place, we settled in Monteverde.

We entered the dimly lit La Pietra Scheggiata and were greeted near the door. The owner offered us our choice of tables, while his wife and young son-maybe four!-patiently waited to take our order.

With little urging, we each ordered the tortino di spinaci antipasto, made with cheese, spinach, cream and saffron and a large plate of assorted cheese, served with homemade honey and jam for the table.

The specialty of the house is the cacio e pepe pasta served with thick truffle sauce-my husband and both of our friends ordered that. Being the daredevil I am, and mostly because I wanted to try more than one of their house favorites, I ordered the carbonara, prepared with extra black pepper and topped with the same truffle sauce.

Oh. My. God.

I’m convinced the Romans were able to control the western world for more than 1,000 years because they mesmerized their enemies with dishes like these.

We ended our feast with homemade panna cotta, topped with caramel and chocolate.

- Defronte e

Just a few blocks from the Spanish Steps, this restaurant is slightly away from the band of tourist restaurants and was one of the places I went with friends a few years ago. It was typically Romano and we loved the fact that the menus were only in Italian (always a good sign, mind you!)

This time, the menus were translated into English and it had more of a tourist-spot feel. The prices were still reasonable and the food was delicious but I’m not sure I’d return.
Located in the heart of Monti, Ai Tre Scalini is the wine bar where we met NYC/Caribbean Ragazza. Although we didn’t dine here, the wine, atmosphere and friendly staff had me at “buona sera.”

Weighty issue; Two new info packets address childhood obesity

Intelligencer Journal Lancaster, PA October 21, 2004 | Susan Lindt It’s just a couple pounds of baby fat. What can it hurt?

Plenty.

If you haven’t already gotten that message from the media blitz on childhood obesity, local health care providers are driving it home again on two fronts – at your doctor’s office and at your children’s school.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 64 percent of American adults are overweight, and 30 percent are obese. And along with that extra weight comes all the ailments obesity brings.

Nationally, 16 percent of children between ages 6 and 19 are overweight, an increase of more than 10 percent from just a decade ago.

When Highmark Blue Shield looked at the children it covers in central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley, the figures were more dire, with 32 percent overweight.

And for a health insurance company, the bottom line is the bottom line. If those children remain overweight into adulthood, it will cost considerably more to keep them healthy.

“(Obesity/overweight) is probably in the top five major problems we face as insurers,” said Dr. Brent O’Connell of Highmark Blue Shield. “Every system in the body is involved with obesity: cardiac, musculoskeletal, vascular. You’re dealing with people’s joints being replaced, cardiac disease, just about everything.” Despite the national trend, many doctors aren’t addressing the obesity problem with patients. In April, the CDC reported only 40 percent of physicians told obese patients to lose weight in 2000, a decrease from 1994, when 42.5 percent of doctors raised the issue with patients.

But it’s worth a doctor’s time to mention it. Patients who were advised to lose weight were nearly three times more likely to drop excess pounds than those who didn’t discuss weight with their doctor, according to the CDC report.

“(Doctors) should recognize that obesity, similar to hypertension and diabetes, is a chronic condition and, as such, requires continued follow-up,” CDC researcher Dr. Omer Abid said. “We need to investigate why advice from the health care profession is low.” In 1998, federal guidelines urged physicians to discuss weight with patients because obesity leads to major ailments, including diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease and some cancers. The CDC reported some physicians don’t feel they have the formal training to advise patients about weight loss and nutrition.

“I wish I could say with a straight face that they know all this stuff,” O’Connell said. “You would expect that. But with all the new technology and prescription drugs coming on the market, most of them are not up to date on nutrition and new treatments.” Highmark Blue Shield hopes to fill the gap in its participating physicians’ nutrition know-how and cut into childhood obesity figures with a packet it sent to more than 2,000 doctors in central Pennsylvania and Lehigh Valley.

“The way you take care of a problem like this is to educate the people who will be your customers down the road,” said O’Connell, who was a pediatrician for 20 years before joining Highmark. “If we can get kids to understand the importance of not being obese, it will pay off for us in the long run by having reduced numbers of obese patients with fewer complications down the road.” The physicians’ packet includes guidelines for treatment, prevention and self-help materials, a resource list, body mass index growth charts for boys and girls and a BMI calculator that uses height and weight measurements to determine if a child is proportionate, overweight or obese. here highmark blue shield

“(The packet) is a reminder to physicians of what they should be doing and how to do it,” O’Connell said.

The packets also include three versions of a poster physicians can hang showing a child at a healthy weight and the same child who appears slightly chubbier. Under each photo are the child’s statistics showing how a mere 6 pounds can dramatically change where he or she falls on the BMI scale and his or her risk for obesity- related illnesses.

Meanwhile, at Lancaster General, a similar packet is being developed for school nurses, who are mandated by the state Department of Health to record students’ BMI and send home results to their parents. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children’s BMI be measured yearly, some school and health officials worried how the information would be received by parents who may not understand BMI.

“At face value, I think (the packets) are a good thing, with obesity on the rise,” Conestoga Valley High School nurse Nancy Lopez said. “But just giving people information is not enough.” Lancaster General’s packet explains BMI, nutrition and lifestyle choices to parents and offers direction in curbing potential weight problems in their children.

“Our hope is that schools send our packet home to parents a week before the BMI results are sent home so parents have time to read the information,” said Alice Yoder, Lancaster General’s director of community health. “We’re also offering a free lecture series to schools about about BMI, the importance of physical activity, making healthy food choices and positive parenting. We’ll even offer parents a brief consultation after the program about what to do.” The Lancaster General packet uses principles from Shapedown, a weight-management program with a 20-plus-year track record for slimming down families by teaching nutrition, exercise and lifestyle modification.

Lancaster General started holding 10-week Shapedown classes more than a year ago, and the results have been so impressive, Highmark offered scholarships to help parents with the $350 cost. Lancaster General also successfully lobbied health insurance companies to reimburse families for the classes.

“The educational piece is so integral,” said registered nurse Rosemary Search of Lancaster General’s Education & Wellness Center. “That’s hard to measure sometimes, but you can see the results long term.” Getting back to basics could save lives and the nation’s health care system, which is suffering under the weight of obesity-related costs totaling $117 billion annually, according to Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson. go to web site highmark blue shield

“We need to find effective interventions to deal with this on multiple levels &tstr; the schools, at home, in the workplace – because clearly this is a major driver in terms of growth in health care spending,” said Kenneth Thorpe of Emory University, which conducted a 15-year study showing treatment of obese patients costs 37 percent more than treating those in normal weight ranges. The difference costs the health care system an extra $301 per person.

Insurers are beginning to step up prevention efforts, which prove less costly than treating obesity-related conditions.

In July, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which runs the health program for elderly and disabled Americans, changed policy and paved the way for millions of overweight Americans to make medical claims for obesity treatment. Many private health insurers are expected to follow suit, and North Carolina’s largest health insurance company already has.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina announced this week the most comprehensive package ever offered to prevent and treat overweight and obesity. The company already covers weight-loss surgery, but now it also pays for four annual doctor visits specifically to assess a patient’s weight and provide treatment, nutritional counseling sessions with dietitians and two prescription diet drugs for those who already are overweight.

For more information about Lancaster General’s ongoing Shapedown programs for children between 5 and 17, including scholarship applications, call 544-3145.
